Responsibilities
  • Maintains competency in JROTC instruction.
  • Employs diagnostic methods to identify student proficiency levels and plans short- and long-range programs to address identified needs.
  • Establishes a physical, emotional, and intellectual climate conducive to the teaching/learning process.
  • Uses effective teaching methods to achieve desired objectives.
  • Employs a variety of methods and materials to motivate JROTC students to learn and seek additional learning experiences.
  • Provides leadership in establishing positive relationships between students and between students and teachers.
  • Selects, develops, and uses evaluation techniques to assess student progress and instructional effectiveness.
  • Assists students in accepting and practicing standards of good decorum.
  • Promotes harmonious and cooperative relationships with staff, parents, and the community.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Must have a valid Alaska teaching certificate (Alaska type M) or equivalent.
  • Enlisted instructor: high school graduate or equivalent; preference for college graduates with additional qualifications.
  • Officer instructor: bachelor's degree or higher; degree may be waived for up to 4 years from initial hire with ASD approval while pursuing degree.
  • Must meet service requirements and background review for JROTC instructors; be certified by the appropriate military branch.
  • Grade/status requirements: retirement and active-duty conditions vary by rank, including specific rules for retired enlisted members (E6–E9) and retired officers (O3–O6), and active-duty members (SSG, PSG/SFC) across services; detailed retention criteria are required.
  • Must be of good moral character and able to represent the program and services positively in daily community contact.
  • Thorough knowledge of subject matter and the instructional ability to motivate and develop leadership, self-reliance, and patriotism in students.
  • Citizen of the United States with no conflicts of interest that could affect duties.
  • Personal qualities and performance standards as listed in efficiency reports; conduct above reproach with no disqualifying personal habits or convictions; prior discharge must be honorable where applicable.
  • GT aptitude score of 100 or better; pass Retention medical fitness standards as required; NAC checks required before and during employment; ongoing NAC monitoring per district policy.
  • JROTC instructors employed by ASD must maintain district-approved qualifications.
