The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Education Coordinator for the Highland Mountain Correctional Center (HMCC) located in Eagle River, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:- Coordinate scheduling for apprenticeship programs
- Teach and assist prisoners with educational pursuits to include ABE/GED and ESL
- Counsel prisoners in areas of career development, education, and vocational training
- Act as a liaison between Hiland Mountain Correction Center, the University of Alaska, and AVTEC
- Test prisoners for career scope, review post-secondary and vocational programs, and assist with job placement or job service referrals

The Education section is a fast-paced area that involves interaction with Law Enforcement, Correctional Officers, Probation Officers, Pretrial Officers, Medical staff and prisoners.

Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) effectively, considering the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in education, counseling, social or behavior sciences or a closely related field AND one year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services. This experience is equivalent to work such as the Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant 2 or Education Program Assistant, and similar classes with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent with another employer.
Additional qualifying work experience may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk. Some positions perform activities that require bending, crouching, walking or standing for long periods of time. Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels, vibration, dust, dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.
