Position Summary
The Controller is a key senior management team member and trusted advisor to the CEO/President and senior leadership. This is a highly hands-on role that oversees the full accounting and financial operations across all three production sites, while directly managing the Orange County location’s accounting team (5 people) and overseeing Controllers in Washington and North Carolina.
This role requires a highly competent and confident leader with the ability to independently run the financial operation. The Controller oversees HR and IT as well, managing system access and reporting integrity (Sage 500). The Controller must ensure transactions from Purchasing and AR post accurately from set-up tables and provide tight review controls.
Position Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all accounting operations: accounts payable, receivable, general ledger, payroll, and monthly physical inventory
- Supervise a 5-person Accounting team in Orange County, with dotted-line oversight of NC and WA Controllers
- Review high-volume transactional activity (~5,000 invoices/month), ensuring accuracy and posting integrity in Sage 500
- Perform journal entries for the Orange County facility and ensure proper consolidation with other locations
- Direct monthly and year-end close processes, financial statement preparation, and management reporting
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across 5 entities
- Partner with the CEO on operational cost tracking, margin evaluation, and process improvements
- Coordinate with the lab team to integrate cost formulas for ~40 products (formulas provided by R&D)
- Support HR/payroll processing (HR reports into this role operationally)
- Oversee sales tax compliance, physical inventory counts, and manual month-end inventory processes
- Support external audit and banking relationships
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- 15-20 years of accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership capacity
- Background in manufacturing or distribution, preferably in construction materials
- Strong familiarity with high-volume environments, inventory-heavy operations, and intercompany structures
- Proficient in Sage 500 (or similar ERP) and Excel; able to operate without IT support
- Ability to implement best practices while adapting to a middle-market, family-owned culture
- Comfortable managing multiple systems, manual processes, and hands-on responsibilities
- Strong communication skills and the ability to lead by example
