Position: Plan Check Coordinator I/II

Plan Check Coordinator I

The City of Anaheim Planning & Building Department seeks a dynamic Plan Check Coordinator I to organize, coordinate, track, and expedite building plan review activities. The coordinator will also lead a small team when necessary and ensure prompt action on plan review and approval.

Responsibilities:

  • Route and distribute building plans within the Division and to various City departments for timely review and approval.
  • Track the status of plan review documents and permit applications; coordinate approved submittals from other departments with the Division’s plan check section.
  • Identify and resolve overdue plan reviews and approvals; facilitate the resolution of issues that may arise between divisions/departments.
  • Receive fee notification from other departments and update the automated permit tracking system.
  • Distribute customer plans to retained plan check consultants; coordinate receipt of reviewed plans and revisions performed by outside consultants.
  • Record fees charged by consultants and ensure collection of fees prior to release of plans or revisions to customers.
  • Assist customers on the telephone or in person with plan check applications prior to plan submittal; provide customer assistance on status‑related issues, including fee calculations, plan check status and duration of permits; respond to customer concerns or complaints.
  • Verify the accuracy and completeness of information submitted for plan review to facilitate and expedite the plans examination and permitting processes.
  • Assist Senior Plan Examiners in processing plan check extensions and alternate material/construction requests; collect permit fees and update the computerized record system.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Journey level experience in permit processing, building plan check or building construction; basic supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of: Functions and responsibilities of the City’s Planning Department and Building Services Division, building/plan review procedures, submittal requirements, basic building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical code requirements, city policies and procedures, construction terminology, fee structures, automated systems, performance evaluation and training principles, office procedures, and applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Ability to: Understand, interpret, explain and apply City policies, fee schedules and regulations; organize, facilitate and expedite the plan check and permitting process; assess effectiveness of daily operations and make recommendations; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate effectively orally and in writing; prioritize multiple activities; prepare clear reports and correspondence; exercise judgment and initiative; lead and review staff work; exercise tact and diplomacy with external and internal customers;

    operate a computer and related software.
Plan Check Coordinator II

This level requires advanced experience and may perform lead supervisor functions. Responsibilities include acting as a primary contact with developers, contractors and City staff, providing one‑on‑one support, ensuring seamless transition from planning to building permits, and resolving complex issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as liaison and primary contact with businesses, developers, contractors and City staff, providing information on City requirements.
  • Provide one‑on‑one support to customers based on project characteristics.
  • Work directly with Planning Services staff to ensure entitlements and conditions of approval are satisfied.
  • Facilitate and support customers in the plan review process by guiding submittal requirements, coordinating site visits and meetings, and monitoring progress to ensure prompt action on review, approval, and inspections.
  • Respond to inquiries and resolve difficult and sensitive complaints; facilitate issue resolution between departments; assist applicants with requirements of outside agencies (Health Department, NPDES, etc.).
