The City of Anaheim Public Library is seeking Part Time Library Assistants to fulfill a variety of creative roles ranging from providing excellent public service at public service desks to unique programming for the public, or communications and marketing support for the library, in a team‑oriented library system. We are looking for dynamic individuals with specialized skills, creativity, and excellent customer service.
Positions will work under the moderate supervision of a full‑time librarian or supervisor. The ideal candidate will possess prior public library experience.
The Anaheim Public Library was recognized as the 2021 Library of the Year by Gale and Library Journal. There are ten library outlets serving the City of Anaheim and surrounding communities. Six branch libraries, the self‑service branch at ARTIC Transportation Center, the Anaheim Heritage Center, the Mobile Library, and STEAM Adventures:

This is a part‑time position averaging 20 or 30 hours per week. A minimum number of hours is not guaranteed. The role requires Saturday, Sunday, and evening availability and the ability to travel to other branches as needed for coverage.
Responsibilities- Provide support to librarians by assisting with Adult, Senior, Teen/Youth, and pre‑primer programs and assisting with reference and collection maintenance for programs.
- Assist patrons with basic reference and light research, utilizing standard print and non‑print resources, and refer more difficult queries to professional staff.
- Coordinate selected activities or services within the library.
- Develop and conduct library programs including children’s story hour, outreach to schools and the community, class visits, and library tours.
- Implement library policies and procedures and resolve patron concerns.
- Assist with cataloging and processing books.
- Instruct patrons in the use of library resources such as equipment and catalogs, and conduct instructional classes in library technology and resource use.
- Make recommendations on the selection of books and other library materials.
- Assist in grant writing and preparing press releases.
- Utilize design software to create flyers and other promotional material.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Previous public library experience in a senior clerical or paraprofessional role is required. A Bachelor of Arts is strongly preferred; an AA or Library Technology Certificate plus equivalent experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
Knowledge and AbilityKnowledge of literature, public library operations and automated systems, policies and procedures, current events, reference tools, library technical resources, equipment troubleshooting, presentation development, age‑appropriate programs, basic software applications, basic math, scheduling methods, and team building principles.
Ability to work independently, use sound judgment and problem‑solving skills, communicate clearly both orally and in writing, develop and present programs, assist library patrons in material selection, listen effectively, use good judgment within the scope of authority, understand oral and written instructions, handle stressful situations, recognize and resolve problems, establish and maintain effective working relationships, answer general library questions, record data, maintain statistical records, assist in grant writing, and write memos and reports.
Licenses/CertificationsAbility to obtain a valid Class C California driver’s license may be required for certain assignments.
