The Basics:Position Summary
The Lead Switchman (Night Shift) is responsible for safely coordinating and executing rail switching operations involving 100-car crude unit trains. This role requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to safety. The Lead Switchman oversees switch lineups, rail movements, and securement while ensuring compliance with all operating rules, safety policies, and federal regulations.
Pay Rate:- Lead and coordinate night shift switching operations for 100-car crude unit trains
- Ensure proper switch lineup and route verification prior to all rail movements
- Direct and monitor the safe movement of locomotives and rail equipment
- Perform securement of railcars and locomotives in accordance with regulations
- Conduct locomotive and railcar inspections, identifying and reporting defects
- Establish and maintain track protection (blue flag, derails, and other safeguards)
- Communicate clearly with crew members, supervisors, and facility personnel
- Enforce safety rules, job briefings, and situational awareness at all times
- Respond appropriately to abnormal or emergency situations
- Maintain accurate documentation and reports as required
- Prior rail switching or yard operations experience required
- Experience handling crude oil unit trains strongly preferred
- Demonstrated leadership and ability to take charge of complex switching moves
- Strong understanding of railroad safety rules and operating practices
- High level of reliability, responsibility, and professionalism
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating schedules
- Physically capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions
