About Metabolic
Metabolic’s mission is to transition the global economy to a fundamentally sustainable state. We advise governments, businesses, and NGOs on how to adapt to a fast‑changing global context. Combining systems thinking and data science, we map and understand local and global systems to assess where to intervene and develop solutions that can dramatically shift how the economy functions. We also build new ventures and non‑profit organizations that remove critical barriers and lead to transformational change.
About the InternshipMetabolic is looking for a quantitatively‑focused Systems Analysis Intern to support our next phase of work: driving place‑based transitions across multiple value chains and strengthening the analytical foundations of a regenerative economy.
This role sits close to the heart of our mission. We use systems thinking and quantitative analysis to help governments, businesses, investors, and communities navigate complex socio‑ecological transitions. As an intern, you will support analytical work that connects the big picture with grounded, regional realities — contributing to projects in food systems, forestry, energy, textiles, the built environment, and other sectors.
You will work alongside experienced systems analysts and project leads, contributing to data analysis, systems mapping, modelling, and synthesis. Rather than leading methodologies yourself, you will help build and refine them — gaining hands‑on experience in translating complexity into actionable insights.
In this role, you might see yourself:
- Supporting the mapping of complex socio‑ecological systems at regional or sectoral levels
- Assisting with quantitative research to identify leverage points and transition pathways
- Helping analyse financial flows, institutional structures, and governance models that underpin economic systems
- Contributing to the development of systems maps, diagrams, and analytical frameworks
- Translating data and analysis into clear visuals and written insights for internal teams and external partners
- Learning how to balance methodological rigor with real‑world data gaps and constraints
The internship starts between June
2026 and September 2026 (flexible), and should last for 5-6 months
. It requires four to five days of work per week. This internship provides a stipend amounting to €877.59/month pro‑rata (based on 40 hours per week).
We are looking for someone who:
- Is enrolled in a degree programme (please mention your expected graduation date in your CV)
- Has strong quantitative and analytical skills
- Is proficient in tools such as Python, R, Excel, or similar analytical software
- Has experience with data cleaning, statistical analysis, and visualisation
- Is structured, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working with complex datasets
- Has strong English writing skills
- Has an interest in sustainability, circular economy, or the bioeconomy
To be eligible for an internship with Metabolic, the following criteria must be met (non‑negotiable):
- Enrolled for the entire duration of the internship.
- Have a residence permit in the Netherlands (valid for working purposes and the entire duration of the internship)
- Have, or be able to request, a BSN (burgerservicenummer/citizen service number.
The Final date to receive applications for this position is end of day Sunday, March 29th, 2026.
