With around 76 dancers in the main company and 17 dancers in the Junior Company, Dutch National Ballet (HNB) performs a wide repertoire of classical, modern and new ballet pieces. Together with Dutch National Opera, HNB is part of Dutch National Opera & Ballet. HNB is regarded as one of the top ballet companies in the world and its music staff play a vital role in the success of the company.
In total Dutch National Opera & Ballet comprises more than 600 employees.
As a pianist of Dutch National Ballet you are accompanying ballet classes, workshops, studio rehearsals and occasionally performances. You work for the main company and for the Junior Company. You may also be asked to work during special events such as auditions and presentations. Where necessary you will arrange existing repertoire for piano rehearsals. Additionally, you will provide musical advice, expertise and support as required.
In daily practice the pianist has a relationship with the ballet masters with whom he/she works with, and also with other members of the Dutch National Ballet music staff. This role stands hierarchically under the Music Director of Dutch National Ballet.
Job requirementsWe are seeking someone with a classical piano degree from a music conservatory who has multiple years of experience as a pianist of a professional ballet company or high-level ballet school. An ability to improvise within the classical music idiom is essential, coupled with strong skills and experience in the realization of the classical ballet repertoire in piano reductions. High quality performance skills are also essential.
The variety of repertoire, activities and schedules call for someone who is flexible and has the capacity to accommodate a broad spectrum of different artistic aesthetics.
- a contract of employment for the duration of 12 months with intention of extension;
- the salary for this position is, depending on knowledge and experience, a minimum of € 2.973 and a maximum of € 4.605 gross per month for full-time employment;
- 8% holiday pay;
- year-end bonus of € 400 on a fulltime basis;
- 27 vacation days plus 12 ATV days on a fulltime basis;
- contribution for travel costs;
- contribution for a gym membership;
- the CAO for Drama & Dance is applicable to this employment.
An audition will be part of the selection procedure. The audition will comprise; performance of a prepared piece (chosen by the applicant), performance of a designated excerpt of ballet repertoire (chosen by Dutch National Ballet), sight-reading, a short ballet class, a rehearsal with conductor, and an interview with the audition panel.
