Job Overview
AMHERST Summer Camp Assistant Director – 19 hours per week through May 2026, 37.5 hours per week between June 2026 and August 2026. Position requires occasional weekend and evening availability.
Key Responsibilities- Assists in the administration and supervision of the Recreation Department's "Fun in the Sun" Summer Day Camp program, in compliance with Local Board of Health regulations and established policies and procedures.
- Ensures the safety of campers and staff through implementation of departmental policies and Board of Health regulations.
- Assists with pre‑camp organization, (e.g., material and supply ordering, organizing group rosters, ePACT information, parent communications)
- Program development, staffing, and related logistics, including ePACT records reviews.
- Performs administrative tasks related to activities and events;
- Assists with locating and inviting guest speakers and performers.
- Assists in monitoring transitions on campus (e.g., between activities, to presentations, to lunch) and off campus (e.g., trips to War Memorial Pool)
- Serves as the communication liaison between Camp Counselors, Camp Coordinator Director, Parents, and Facilities;
- Communicates with parents/guardians regarding missing required documents, attendance behavior concerns and/or injuries; alerts the Summer Camp Coordinator Director of staffing, scheduling, behavioral and policy issues.
- Completes accident reports and incident reports and submits them to Camp Director and/or Outreach Director by required deadlines.
- Assists with keeping track of and maintaining camp supplies and equipment in good condition.
- Assists with recruiting, hiring, and training of summer camp staff.
- Maintains calendar of staff availability and prepares weekly staff schedules.
- Monitors staff attendance logs.
- Helps manage volunteer teams for the Town of Amherst July 3rd Independence Day Celebration event.
- Completes accident reports and incident reports and submits to Camp Director and/or Outreach Director by required deadlines.
- Assists Camp Director in pre‑camp organization, i.e., material and supply ordering, organizing group rosters, ePACT information, parent communications etc.
- Delegates program planning tasks to camp counselors.
- Performs administrative tasks for event planning including locating and inviting guest speakers and performers.
- Acts as substitute counselor in camp programs, as needed.
- Assumes Summer Camp director responsibilities in Director’s absence.
- Participates in and assists with facilitation of leadership team meetings, conferences, in‑service training programs, and staff meetings.
- Perform similar or related work as required, directed, and/or appropriated.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Two (2) years' experience working in a school, after‑school, or camp setting; AND a degree in, or in the process of completing a degree program in, Education, Childhood Development, Psychology/Social Work or other developmental discipline with a focus on elementary‑aged children; OR equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and strong leadership abilities.
- Considerable knowledge of child development and management.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other camp or recreation employees and supervisors.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to plan and supervise work of staff and volunteers.
- Basic computer skills or willingness to learn.
- Willingness and ability to work occasionally.
