Athletic Director / Assistant Principal / Dean of Students & Activities
Location:
Amesbury High School
Reports To:
High School Principal / Superintendent of Schools
Status:
Full-Time, Year-Round Administrative Position beginning 7/1/26
Job Goal
To provide visionary leadership in the management of a comprehensive high school athletics and activities program while serving as a primary administrative leader for student culture, discipline, and school-wide operations. This hybrid role supports the Building Principal in fostering a safe, inclusive, and high-performing educational environment and school culture through effective communication, personnel management, and student-centered advocacy.
Core Responsibility Categories
I. School Leadership & Administration
Administrative Oversight:
Serve as a leader of the school in conjunction with the Principal and Assistant Principal of Students/Curriculum.
Strategic Planning:
Collaborate on the development and implementation of the School Improvement Plan and district-wide initiatives.
Policy Development:
Assist in the preparation and annual revision of teacher and student handbooks, ensuring policies align with state and federal laws.
Compliance & Reporting:
Assist in Title IX/Equity coordination, civil rights compliance, and state-mandated reporting (e.g., SIMS data, safety reports).
Evaluation:
Evaluate and provide actionable feedback to teachers and staff in the school.
II. Student Culture & Support
Behavioral Management:
Administer the school's disciplinary code with a focus on due process, restorative practices, and proactive relationship building.
Safety & Investigations:
Lead investigations into student misconduct, including bullying, harassment, and chemical health violations; coordinate with the School Resource Officer (SRO) and local law enforcement.
Attendance & Engagement:
Monitor student attendance and enrollment reports as it relates to athletics and student activities; collaborate with AP of Curriculum and Principal around students at risk and drop out prevention.
Special Populations:
Ensure disciplinary procedures comply with Special Education laws; participate in relevant/appropriate (?) 504/IEP meetings and Student Support Teams (SST).
Crisis Response:
Serve as a primary responder for building-based emergencies, lock-down drills, and student mental health crises (coordinating with Mobile Crisis and outside agencies).
III. Athletic Department Management
Program Leadership:
Manage all varsity-level sports (including co-ops) and JV teams in accordance with MIAA and League regulations.
Personnel Management:
Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate a staff of coaches, assistant AD, and trainers; maintain the Coaches' Handbook.
Scheduling & Logistics:
Coordinate all seasonal game schedules, practice times, and facility use; arrange and cross-check transportation and officials.
Fiscal Oversight:
Develop and manage the athletics budget; oversee the collection of user fees, gate receipts, and fundraising (Boosters) in compliance with municipal finance laws.
Health & Safety:
Manage the concussion protocol, collect physicals and medical clearances, and coordinate with the athletic trainer for injury management.
Student-Athletes:
Oversee issues with student-athletes as they related to academics, behaviors, and/or concerns with coaches or teammates
Facility Management:
In conjunction with the Facilities Director, oversee the maintenance and assignment of athletic fields and indoor sports venues.
Communication:
Communicate regularly with the community and families regarding athletics, making information accessible.
League
Collaboration:
Work with other athletic directors and schools in the Cape Ann League; attend meetings, etc. necessary for league collaboration
IV. Student Activities & Co-Curriculars
Clubs & Organizations:
Post positions, hire advisors, and supervise the operations of all non-athletic student clubs and activities.
Event Oversight:
Supervise major school events including dances, prom, large-scale fundraising events
