Position: Equipment Mechanic I/II - AMA Special Jobs

Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential

Duties Equipment Mechanic I
  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
  • Performs acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.
  • Performs emergency spot repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment as required moves items related to these activities.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Equipment Mechanic II
  • Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
  • Trains less experienced technicians.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
Minimum Qualifications Experience
  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Equipment Mechanic I-II: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Equipment Mechanic I: Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" Endorsement or have obtained a Class "A" CDL with "N" Endorsement, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" Endorsement or have obtained the "N" Endorsement within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Competencies for Equipment Mechanic I/II

Considerable knowledge of

  • Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Automatic and manual shift transmission repair
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes

Proficient skill in

  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
  • Using applicable electronic test equipment
  • Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Some skill in

  • Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts

Ability to

  • Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
