The Amarillo District is looking for a motivated Equipment Mechanic I/II to join our Jobs Maintenance Section. You’ll perform advanced repairs, maintenance, and inspections on vehicles and heavy equipment—helping ensure our roads and highways stay safe and reliable.

We offer company sponsored CDL training with $0 upfront monetary commitment. Earn your full salary while training with lodging, transportation and per-diem provided if necessary.

Minimum Salary
: $40,918.00

Maximum Salary
: $71,000.00

Responsibilities
  • Perform repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Order, pick up, and deliver parts, materials, tools, and operate equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
  • Perform acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment as required; move items related to these activities.
  • Perform quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Additional essential duties for Equipment Mechanic II:
    • Travel and perform work in other shops throughout the state as required.
    • Train less experienced technicians.
    • Complete repair order paperwork and accurately enter data into fleet information management system.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Equipment Mechanic I-II:
    Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Equipment Mechanic I:
    Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" Endorsement or have obtained a Class "A" CDL with "N" Endorsement within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
