Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III – Fleet Operations Division (Job )

TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division in Amarillo, TX, is looking for an Equipment Mechanic I, II or III. This role requires repair, maintenance, and inspection of fleet vehicles and equipment used in construction of highways and bridges.

Position Information

Location:

Amarillo District Headquarters – 5715 Canyon Dr, Amarillo, TX 79110

Travel:
Yes, 25% of the time.

Shift: Day – Monday to Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (onsite).

Salary and Compensation

Equipment Mechanic I: $50,000 – $61,130 per year

Equipment Mechanic II: $50,000 – $71,055 per year

Equipment Mechanic III: $55,000 – $81,351 per year

Minimum Salary: $50,000.00

Maximum Salary: $81,351.00

Pay Basis: yearly (FLSA status: nonexempt)

Job Duties

Equipment Mechanic I, II & III Responsibilities (common to all levels):

  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
  • Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Complete repair order paperwork and enter data accurately into the fleet information management system.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
  • Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; move items related to these activities as required.
  • Perform quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by checking required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Equipment Mechanic II additional responsibilities:

  • Train less experienced technicians.

Equipment Mechanic III additional responsibilities:

  • Lead and train less experienced technicians.
  • Act as Shop Coordinator in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Equipment Mechanic I – 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II – 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic III – 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.

Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license (required to drive a state vehicle).

  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain it within 120 calendar days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour.
  • Subject to noise.
  • Required to wear protective gear: respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time, frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Kneeling, bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
