Barge Mechanic (Direct Hire)

We are seeking an experienced Barge Mechanic to support maintenance, repair, and refurbishment activities on marine vessels and barge platforms. This direct-hire role is based in Norfolk, VA
, supporting shipyard operations in a hands-on, safety-focused environment. The ideal candidate brings strong mechanical and hydraulic experience and is comfortable working in active marine/industrial conditions.
- Perform maintenance, repair, refurbishment, and testing of marine mechanical and auxiliary systems
- Service and support hydraulic systems
, including pumps, control valves, cylinders, and high-pressure hoses - Execute vessel integrity work including plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and general repairs
- Read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, blueprints, and installation requirements
- Assist with assembly, installation, and testing of hydraulic systems and hose assemblies
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues and support corrective actions under supervision
- Complete ship maintenance tasks based on written and verbal instructions
- Adhere to all safety, quality, and environmental regulations
- Properly use required PPE
, including respirators when necessary - Work assigned shifts and additional hours, including weekends or off-hours, as production demands require
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2–3+ years of experience as a Barge Mechanic or in marine/shipyard/heavy industrial mechanical maintenance
- Working knowledge of shipboard mechanical and hydraulic systems
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals, drawings, and work instructions
- Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices
- Ability to work in shipyard conditions, including confined spaces, heights, and varying weather
- Ability to obtain and maintain required base access and credentials
- Vocational training, apprenticeship, or equivalent hands‑on experience
- Experience working on U.S. Navy vessels, barges, or similar marine platforms
- Familiarity with hydraulic systems, diesel equipment, and auxiliary ship systems
- Knowledge of shipyard safety and quality standards
- Direct hire with long-term stability
- Work in a major Norfolk‑area shipyard supporting critical marine operations
- Hands‑on role with diverse mechanical and hydraulic systems
