Responsibilities and Role

Nursing Facilities Nurse Surveyor is a front-line field position where you will travel to facilities to conduct on-site inspections and investigations to assess compliance with state and federal laws and rules in long-term care settings (nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and day activities health services).

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct on-site licensure inspections, complaint and incident investigations, and annual comprehensive surveys.
  • Assess compliance in areas such as admissions, transfers and discharges; resident rights; staffing and census; quality of care; quality of life; resident care plans; social, psychological and rehabilitative services; provision of medical services; and therapeutic activity programming.
  • Write detailed inspection or survey reports documenting deficiencies and supporting regulatory determinations.
  • Communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders; conduct exit conferences with facility staff; and verify corrections of previously cited violations.
  • Possibly supervise team members during inspections and provide technical assistance to facilities.
  • Be available for on-call duties and potential emergency licensure actions; travel regularly within a region and statewide.

This role requires reporting and documentation with a strong emphasis on timely and accurate records.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of issues and needs of populations at risk in health care and institutional environments.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles and professional standards of patient care.
  • Interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; ability to prepare detailed written reports.
  • Ability to multi-task, analyze data, interpret regulatory policies, and work independently.
  • Ability to use computers for report writing and electronic communications.
  • Ability to ensure professional judgment and sound decision-making; punctuality and task organization.
Qualifications and Certifications
  • Must be licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Complete all federal/state training for Nursing Facilities, including Surveyor Minimum Qualification Training (SMQT) within one year of hire date.
Screening and Additional Information
  • Experience in a Long-term Care Regulatory program and experience in assessment and documentation of health status are preferred; two years of RN experience in a health care setting is preferred.
  • Flexibility in work hours; travel up to 80% statewide, including overnight and weekend travel. On-call duties may be required. Reliable transportation is required.
