National Account Chief Underwriter – Employee Benefits
Join The Hartford as a National Account Chief Underwriter focusing on employee benefits. This full‑time, mid‑senior level role involves managing Group Life & Disability underwriting for national accounts and providing strategic guidance across the organization.
Responsibilities- Overall management of Group Life & Disability underwriting (5,000+ lives) for National Accounts.
- Handle all pre‑ and post‑sale underwriting, profit management, renewal processing, policy issuance, and changes for the assigned business segment.
- Demonstrate consistent technical proficiency of underwriting guidelines and risk‑management philosophy.
- Build and maintain solid relationships with internal teams and external partners.
- Lead and participate in project work and special assignments to improve underwriting processes.
- Collaborate with sales representatives and brokers on new business, renewals, and service issues.
- Quote new business opportunities for core products and underwrite renewals.
- Negotiate prices and benefits with sales representatives and brokers.
- Mentor Regional Account underwriters and other staff members.
- Leverage additional resources for key cases to facilitate better risk management and innovative solutions.
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- 5+ years of Employee Benefits underwriting experience.
- Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Analytical thinking to recommend and propose solutions for business problems.
- High energy self‑starter with resilience and an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Strong time management, organizational, and desk‑management skills.
- Goal‑oriented with a track record of delivering outcomes.
- Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win.
- Superior technical knowledge and sound decision‑making and analytical skills.
Salary range: $88,080 – $149,400 annually. The base pay is one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package, which may also include short‑term and long‑term incentives, bonuses, and on‑the‑spot recognition.
