Handling tax in a large, sophisticated organization requires more than technical tax knowledge. As a State Income Tax Manager, you will apply your expertise to a wide range of tax areas and processes, devising strategic outcomes for complex issues, with opportunities for mentorship and career progression.

Responsibilities

The State Income Tax Manager will provide a variety of tax consulting, planning, and compliance services to a diverse range of clients across sectors. You will oversee state-level tax projects, including compliance and related research, and lead or direct a team in managing state tax compliance and advisory services for clients. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Managing and executing state income tax compliance responsibilities.
  • Monitoring and analyzing changes in state income tax laws and regulations and determining their impact to clients.
  • Providing complex tax review, research, planning, and consulting services to diverse clients, including federal and state tax regulations.
  • Leading or assisting with various tax planning, research, and special projects.
  • Preparing and reviewing quarterly and annual state income tax provisions.
  • Modeling state income tax benefits and consequences using Microsoft Excel, Power BI or Alteryx.
  • Writing tax technical memos to articulate issues, conclusions, and analysis on state tax issues.
  • Developing and mentoring staff to foster a collaborative team environment.
Qualifications

To qualify for the role, you must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline and approximately six years of related work experience.
  • A high level of proficiency in state income tax codes, regulations, and procedures.
  • A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization.
  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context.
  • Ability to analyze client data, provide technical guidance, and make recommendations to engagement teams.
  • Ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects.
  • Strong influencing skills and the confidence to question existing processes.
  • Willingness to travel as needed and ability to work in a balanced hybrid environment.

Ideally, you’ll also have:

  • An achieved or partially achieved CPA qualification, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation, or the ability to sit for or be a member of a state bar.
