About the Center for Competency Development

The Center for Competency Development was established to address the competency gaps between applicants/employees and what local manufacturing businesses need to provide value to customers. If you're looking to improve your economic well-being and quality of life, we offer competency development that can provide you with a clear pathway to rewarding careers. Our self-paced action learning environments are unlike traditional education methods and result in proven marketable competencies.

Apprenticeship Program - Welder

The Welding Apprenticeship program is built upon the nationally recognized U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) Registered Apprenticeship framework. With support from the Michigan Works Northeast Consortium, employers and apprentices benefit from structured training, wage progression, and potential long-term career advancement. Employees who complete the requirements of the program will earn a USDOL Apprenticeship Certificate, while gaining the skills necessary to succeed in today's job market and find a fulfilling career that suits your interests and strengths, all while being paid as an employee!

Step 1: Application - after completing your application, you will receive an introductory phone call. Prior to committing to the program, a training center walk-through is available.

Step 2: Screening - following program acceptance, a criminal background check and drug screen is required to ensure each candidate has the ability to be successful in the safety sensitive environments.

Step 3: First 30 days - the initial days of paid training include a combination of self-paced online modules partnered with hands-on training.

Step 4: Employee/Employer trial period - provides an opportunity to complete a 30-day trial period to showcase your competencies and determine if the opportunity aligns with your passion.

Step 5:
Full employment with benefits after the employee and employer mutually decides there is a good fit!

Encouragement to Apply: We are excited to welcome new talent to our team! Our experienced team works closely with each apprentice to ensure they understand basic processes and can apply them in their day-to-day work.
