Summary

Under direct supervision of the provider, the nurse will be responsible for patient assessment and care, and maintaining appropriate documentation. This position requires basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care and the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients. The nurse coordinates care to ensure high quality, compassionate patient care at office locations and serves as a liaison with other organizations and departments.

Responsibilities can include ordering medical, pharmacy, and office supplies to support patient care. The nurse ensures compliance with My Michigan Health policies and procedures and follows OSHA, CLIA, and other applicable regulatory requirements. The nurse may train new employees, students, and float staff as required. Patient education, assistance with specialty care modalities, symptom management, emergency responsiveness, and care management for high risk patients are included.

The nurse educates patients on prescriptions, medication reasons and side effects, and coordinates continuity of care with other providers. General office duties (typing, filing, phone, computer use) may be performed as needed. Responsibilities may vary slightly by practice; the supervisor will clarify duties.

Responsibilities

• Triages calls, schedules urgent/emergent add-ons, relays test results, processes medication refills, and coordinates consults, testing, insurance pre-certification and documentation.
• Performs complete patient assessment within licensure scope, greets patients/family, conducts routine pre-examination procedures including vital signs, maintains accurate patient records, processes reconciliations, secure messaging, and allergy documentation, and handles refills within scope.
• Coordinates the care team with the provider’s indicated plan, and engages patients and families in disease management and care processes.
• Assists providers with examinations and procedures; prepares and cleans patient areas and disposes of contaminated supplies; sterilizes instruments as needed.
• Maintains knowledge of necessary computer systems (MAPS, MCIR, Practice Management, EMR, LIS, and related programs) and participates in office technology use to support providers and staff.

Qualifications

• RN:
  Registered Nurse; BLS (Basic Life Support).
• Education:
  
  Associate’s degree required; BSN in nursing preferred.
• Experience/
  
  Skills:
  
  Working knowledge of EMR and Practice Management systems; proficiency with Excel and Word; 3–5 years in healthcare settings or similar; excellent interpersonal communication.

Other Information

• Must be able to travel to satellite clinics if applicable.
• Must maintain documentation and coding in the medical record per policy.
• Annual quality review participation; competency in Microsoft Windows; continuous learning opportunities may be required.

Physical/Mental Requirements

• Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
• Ability to wear PPE and to move about the facility with/without assistive devices; adequate vision and hearing, with or without assistive devices.
• Ability to sit/stand/walk for long periods; frequent postural changes; exposure to blood borne pathogens; adherence to blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and perform required physical movements (reaching, grasping, etc.).
• Physical Demand Level: Light; occasional lifting 11–20 lbs, frequent lifting 10 lbs, and ability to walk/run controls as needed.
