Summary

The Pharmacy Technician Trainee position is designed for individuals enrolled in the My Michigan Health Employer-Based Pharmacy Technician Training Program in partnership with Pharmacy Technician University (PTU). Trainees gain comprehensive didactic and hands‑on training in an inpatient hospital pharmacy while completing state‑approved requirements for pharmacy technician licensure.

This temporary training role provides the foundational knowledge, technical skills, and professional behaviors required to safely support the medication‑use process under the supervision of licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Upon successful completion of the program and licensure, trainees may be eligible for placement into a Pharmacy Technician role within My Michigan Health.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in hands‑on training in medication preparation, dispensing, and delivery within the hospital inpatient pharmacy (50 %).
  • Complete PTU didactic modules (100+ hours) and required quizzes, assignments, and final exam (50 %).
  • Assist with sterile and non‑sterile compounding in compliance with USP  and  standards.
  • Learn and apply principles of medication safety, patient confidentiality (HIPAA), and ethical pharmacy practice.
  • Support the use of automated dispensing cabinets, barcoding, and electronic health record systems.
  • Assist with receiving, stocking, and rotating medications in accordance with storage, labeling, and inventory control standards.
  • Practice accurate pharmaceutical calculations and proper use of pharmaceutical‑medical terminology, abbreviations, and symbols.
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork, professional communication, and adherence to My Michigan policies and procedures.
  • Uphold infection control, aseptic technique, and safety practices in all assigned work areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must successfully complete all PTU didactic modules, hands‑on training, and the PTU final exam with a passing score of 75 % and become licensed within 1 year of hire. If program requirements are not fulfilled, the employee will be separated.
  • Must apply for and obtain Michigan Pharmacy Technician Licensure within 14 days of program completion.
  • Attention to detail and strong commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to follow directions and established procedures.
  • Basic math and computer literacy skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0‑33 % of the workday) lift or carry 11‑20 lbs., frequently (34‑66 % of the workday) 10 lbs. and/or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
