Medical Office Nurse RN – Family Medicine (Ithaca)
Under direct supervision of the provider, the RN will be responsible for patient assessment and care, maintaining appropriate documentation, and coordinating care to assure high‑quality, compassionate patient care. The RN must have basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care and be able to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients. The RN will maintain and oversee patients at the office locations, act as liaison with other organizations, order supplies, ensure compliance with My Michigan Health policies and OSHA, CLIA, and other regulatory agencies, coordinate training of new staff, provide patient education, assist with specialty care modalities, manage symptom management, respond to emergencies, monitor compliance, educate on prescriptions, and perform general office duties as needed.
Responsibilities(20% of time each)
- Triages all calls, schedules daily urgent/emergent add‑ons, receives and relays test results, processes medication refills, supports, directs and refers patients for consults and/or testing, and handles insurance pre‑certification and documentation.
- Provides complete patient assessment within their scope of licensure; greets patients/families, performs routine pre‑examination procedures including vital signs, and records objective and subjective data concerning presenting condition.
- Coordinates the care team with the care indicated by the provider, and works with the patient and families on the disease process and/or care management.
- Assists the provider with examinations and procedures.
- Prepares and cleans the patient area, sets up equipment, and cleans and facilitates room set‑up after a procedure, disposing of contaminated supplies and sterilizing instruments.
- Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.
- Provides for age‑specific needs of the population served according to standards and policies/procedures, as evidenced by observation, documentation, and peer feedback.
- Maintains medical supplies to assure consistent supply levels to meet patient needs.
- Understands necessary computer functions in the office setting:
Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS), Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR), Practice Management, Electronic Medical Records, Laboratory Information System (LIS), Emageon, dictation systems, and other necessary programs. - May be required to travel to satellite clinics.
- Maintains a system for accurately documenting and coding in the medical record as appropriate per policy.
- Participates in annual review for quality and completeness as necessary.
- Manages patient symptoms as directed by the provider.
- Coordinates and ensures continuity of care with other providers.
- Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows.
- Participates in further learning opportunities offered by My Michigan Health.
- BLS – Basic Life Support
Within 1 month of hire or transfer:
Registered Nurse (RN) with an Associate’s Degree; BSN preferred.
- Working knowledge of the organization’s Infor, Electronic Medical Records, and Practice Management programs preferred.
- PC software knowledge must include Excel and Word.
- Knowledge of medical office policies, practices, and procedures normally acquired through three to five years working in the health care system or similar setting.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals at all levels.
- Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials.
- Must move freely around the facility, sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time, including frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
- Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
- Must handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and stay alert.
- Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements.
- Physical Demand Level: Light. May occasionally lift or carry 11–20 lbs., frequently 10 lbs., and perform walking/standing/pushing/pulling arm or leg controls.
