Job Summary - Mold Design EngineerThe Mold Design Engineer is responsible for designing and optimizing high cavitation, close tolerance thermoplastic injection molds for medical products. This role requires strong knowledge of hot runner systems, tool steels, plastic materials, and part design for injection molding. The engineer will use 2D/3D CAD tools and Mold Flow/Mold Cool analysis to ensure efficient, reliable mold performance. Plastic mold experience is preferred.
Responsibilities:
Essential Duties:
- Design and develop high precision injection molds, including mold concepts, layouts, detailed components, and moldability analyses to support new product development and improvements to existing tooling.
- Lead and support tooling projects by creating project schedules, tracking costs, preparing status updates, coordinating cross functional activities, and communicating progress and risks to management.
- Evaluate, review, and approve mold designs from external vendors and internal drafters/technicians to ensure manufacturability, functionality, and compliance with specifications.
- Coordinate mold fabrication with vendors, including obtaining quotations, supervising contracted resources, and overseeing tool construction, delivery, and acceptance.
- Support mold validation and troubleshooting, assisting with mold debugging, improving cycling efficiency, and collaborating with QE, QC, Manufacturing, and Product Engineering teams.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, protocols, investigative reports, and capital expenditure requests related to tooling, equipment, and process improvements.
- Drive continuous improvement and innovation by researching new technologies, enhancing existing tooling and processes, and providing technical recommendations for equipment and strategic tooling decisions.
