Job Description
The First Press Operator directs the crew and performs manual and machine operator tasks related to the set‑up, maintenance, and operations of the press. They are responsible for the quantitative and qualitative press performance.
Schedule:
6 am–6 pm on a rotating schedule.
- Makes ready for and operates an offset printing press.
- Examines the job ticket to determine quantity to be printed, stock specifications, colors, and special printing instructions.
- Examines offset printing plates for visual defects and applies correcting solution to repair minor defects or informs supervisor of non‑repairable plates.
- Applies packing sheet to blanket cylinder to build up blanket thickness to the diameter of the plate cylinder.
- Measures paper thickness and adjusts the space between blanket and impression cylinders according to the thickness of the paper stock.
- Adjusts controls to regulate the flow of ink and dampening solution to the plate cylinder.
- Starts the press, examines printed copy for ink density, position on paper, and registration, and makes adjustments to the press throughout the production run to maintain specific registration and color density.
- Makes adjustments to feeder and delivery mechanisms.
- Removes and replaces worn rollers and adjusts pressure between rollers of the press, using hand tools.
- Leads, provides directions to, trains, and monitors the work of the press crew.
- Performs job duties in accordance with company safety rules.
- Performs proper and required maintenance as well as cleaning of the press.
- Works on job assignments in other manufacturing areas as instructed.
- Comfortable performing repetitive tasks for long periods of time.

- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
- Proficient and knowledgeable regarding machine set up, troubleshooting, and operation as well as directing crew.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of Press Helper experience.
- On‑the‑Job Training:
Annual OSHA required training, including pallet jack and forklift training as assigned.
- Ability to read, write, perform mathematical computations, use measurement devices, and record data; accurately distinguish color variation; possess mechanical aptitude.

While performing essential duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee regularly works near moving equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employees in this position may be advised or required to utilize personal protective equipment, including but not limited to ear protection, eye protection, and lifting equipment.
