The purpose of this position is to ensure the safe and efficient flow of City traffic. This is accomplished by maintaining City signs and signals.
Other duties may include maintaining traffic control equipment, school zone flashers and residential roadway lighting, performing traffic studies, providing City signage services, maintaining safe work environments, providing administrative support and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.
Duties- Maintains traffic control equipment by running tests to ensure correct operation, performing preventative maintenance on signal hardware, troubleshooting and repairing traffic signal problems, installing new traffic signals, assisting with programming and modifying signal‑timing plans, changing out controllers and implementing needed software.
- Maintains school zone flashers by ensuring correct operation, maintaining knowledge of flasher assembly, installation and operation, programming clocks with school meeting times, running tests on flasher equipment and conducting regular inspection of school zone flashers.
- Performs traffic studies by providing hand held traffic counts for phase time studies and by placing and securing moveable counting units at different locations.
- Maintains residential roadway lighting by troubleshooting and repairing lighting systems.
- Provides City signage services by fabricating street name signs, installing signs and using sign machine and computer to create signs.
- Maintains safe working environments for City workers by setting out warning signs, safety cones and barricades, accounting for flow and density of traffic and by routing traffic with arrow boards.
- Provides administrative support by processing work orders, maintaining work logs and on‑call status, supervising work activities, coordinating the message board and radar trailer placement and by providing preventative maintenance on aerial lift trucks and other City vehicles.
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Six (6) months of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency plus at least two (2) years of relevant experience.

Certification and Other Requirements- Valid Class C Drivers License.
- International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician 1 Certification.
- Traffic signal operations, components, and hardware.
- Preventative maintenance procedures for traffic control systems.
- School zone flasher assembly, programming, and operation.
