Description

The Senior Workers’ Compensation & Leave Management Specialist is responsible for comprehensive case management and administration of workers’ compensation claims and all leave of absence programs across Astrana Health’s multi-entity footprint, including clinical practices, medical groups, IPA, MSO, and hospital operations. This role ensures regulatory compliance, promotes consistent policy application, and partners closely with stakeholders to drive safe and timely return-to-work outcomes that support employee well-being and reduce organizational risk.

The ideal candidate brings significant healthcare industry expertise—particularly within acute care and ambulatory settings—and advanced knowledge of multi-state workers’ compensation and leave requirements. Success in this role requires strong analytical capability, sound judgment, and the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, high-volume, and multi-site environment.

What You'll Do Workers’ Compensation Administration
  • Manage end-to-end workers’ compensation (WC) case processing, including incident intake, investigation coordination, documentation, carrier reporting, and case follow-up.
  • Serve as primary liaison for employees, managers, safety partners, TPAs, and insurance carriers on WC-related matters.
  • Monitor claim progression, review adjuster notes, elevate delays, and drive timely case resolution.
  • Support modified duty and return-to-work programs aligned with operational needs and medical restrictions.
  • Conduct injury trend analysis, support root cause prevention initiatives, and recommend safety improvements.
  • Maintain OSHA logs, state-required postings, and records in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Provide accurate data, analytics, and documentation for audits, loss run reviews, and annual insurance renewal processes.
Leave of Absence (LOA) Management
  • Administer all leave programs, including FMLA, CFRA, PDL, ADA, workers’ compensation-related leave, and company-specific LOA policies.
  • Review requests and medical certifications, ensure required notifications, and maintain timely employee communication.
  • Partner with leaders to manage intermittent leave, job protection requirements, extensions, and return-to-work accommodations.
  • Maintain documentation and case activity within HR systems and leave administration platforms.
  • Lead the interactive process for ADA accommodations, ensuring compliance with legal guidelines and operational alignment.
Compliance, Reporting & Training
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOL, FEHA, EEOC, state workers’ compensation mandates, and leave administration regulations.
  • Prepare regular reporting for leadership on injury trends, lost time, leave metrics, and program outcomes.
  • Develop SOPs, manager resources, and education to strengthen compliance and improve operational consistency.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field—or equivalent experience;
    Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 7+ years of progressive experience in workers’ compensation and leave administration; healthcare, clinical, or hospital experience highly preferred.
  • Experience supporting IPA/MSO environments is highly desirable.
  • Advanced understanding of California workers’ compensation statutes, OSHA standards, ADA, FMLA, CFRA, PDL, and multi-state leave regulations.
  • Strong experience collaborating with TPAs, carriers, legal counsel, safety, and risk management teams.
  • Ability to interpret medical notes, understand clinical workflows, and evaluate accommodation requirements.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and case management skills with the ability to manage high-volume caseloads across complex operations.
  • Ability to travel periodically to clinical, IPA, MSO, and hospital sites as business needs require.
