Overview
The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) is seeking an Equipment Operator II for the Streets & Sewers Division to join one of our crews specializing in roadway drainage improvement, alley, street maintenance, and/or asphalt/concrete maintenance. Crew members work in all types of weather conditions, performing tasks related to the maintenance, replacement, repair, inspection and new installation of various sewers and streets infrastructure.
May be required to work hours other than the standard day shift should an emergency arise, and may work rotating standby/on-call shifts.
We are interested in motivated, dedicated, and skilled Heavy Equipment Operators who enjoy working in a team environment committed to providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers. This position is an essential personnel position; the incumbent must be available during emergency events including but not limited to winter storms, coastal storms, and special events.
The Opportunity Street Construction/Maintenance;Asphalt/Brick Maintenance
- Performs all assigned maintenance tasks associated with the repair and resurfacing of City roadways including filling potholes, crack sealing, making street cuts using asphalt saws, using tampers and hot asphalt.
- Skillfully operates light to heavy construction equipment, including pick-up trucks, rollers, milling machine, paver, emulsion distributor, excavator, motor grader, front-end loader, crack sealer, patch truck, and power tools, as required.
- Performs routine daily maintenance including pre/post trip inspections, checking and filling fluids, reporting repairs, and cleaning work area, tools, and equipment.
- Performs construction duties including setting up traffic control, assisting paving crew with various duties such as shoveling and raking, and safely directing/dumping trucks into paver.
- Works in a team environment and assists co–workers or supervisors with other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned.
- Construction, installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters, concrete pads, and bike share stations.
- Flags traffic and sets out barricades, cones, or other safety devices to help ensure the safety of the crew and the public.
- Sewer flushing, jetting, baiting and retrievals, including inspections/cleanings.
- Use a computer, related software, or work order system to enter data for work orders, completion of work, and customer complaint documentation.
- Perform daily written and verbal team/customer interaction including responding to onsite resident inquiries.
- Operate commercial and non-commercial vehicles, based on assignment.
- Respond to emergencies including call-back and mandatory overtime as needed (i.e., snow removal operations, water main breaks, other emergencies).
- Performs any and all other work as required or assigned.

The Ideal CandidateTo qualify for this position
, all candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; at least two years of experience driving related equipment in the field of Solid Waste; ability to demonstrate supervisory skills; must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the state of residence with all applicable endorsements;
thorough knowledge of traffic safety rules and regulations; must be able to read and comprehend technical materials and evaluate work orders; must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, and the physical ability to perform job tasks under all types of weather conditions.
To be considered the ideal candidate
, one should also have the ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather. Knowledge of roadway construction or maintenance activities, and experience utilizing equipment to perform these activities.
