ResponsibilitiesThe Chief Communications Officer serves as the primary media contact, in the Office of the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The incumbent is responsible for ensuring effective communication with the press in order to articulate the missions and priorities of the USPTO. The incumbent will reflect the Deputy Under Secretary and the Under Secretary s philosophies in conversation with leading figures of the government, business, and other groups.
The Chief Communications Officer is responsible for executing an integrated strategic communications plan that advances the USPTO s brand identity; broadens awareness of its programs and priorities; and increases the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences. This includes ensuring impactful internal and external-facing communications across delivery platforms and including social media.

- Required to complete a 1-year SES probationary period (unless already completed).
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
- May be subject to pre-employment and random drug tests.
- File a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report OGE-278e within 30 days of appointment and annually from then on.
- You may be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
