Technical Writer

Imperative is seeking a talented technical writer to support the work of the Department of State, Diplomatic Security Service. This position will be a subcontractor to Parsons in support of the Overseas Security Installation Services II (OSIS II) program. The Technical Writer will be responsible for reviewing reports, manuals, and other documents developed by key stakeholders in relation to the testing, development, and deployment of technologies that benefit diplomatic posts worldwide.
This includes editing content for clarity, consistency across related documents, adherence to Department of State style guides and templates, and gaps in comprehensiveness so that information is comprehensible to a wide audience of readers. The Technical Writer will work with team members in technical roles to interpret information for both technical and non‑technical users. The Technical Writer will also work with Program Coordinators to track document submissions, address comments from contractor and U.S. Government reviewers, and prepare documents for final approval.
Additional special projects may include assisting with internal process reviews, developing documentation and manuals independently for the implementation of new internal systems, developing and updating PowerPoint presentations, and supporting other program operations.
RequirementsCandidates must possess a minimum SECRET clearance or higher. While an active clearance is required, work will generally be unclassified or sensitive but unclassified (SBU). Because of the nature of the Department of State’s global operations, meetings may be scheduled at early hours to accommodate overseas time zones.
- Experience with editing, preparing, and producing technical reports and documentation.
- Experience with style guides and formatting of technical documentation and manuals.
- Familiarity with reading diagrams, engineering drawings, and manufacturer manuals to incorporate them into documentation.
- Experience designing and developing graphics and illustrations that can be used in technical materials, manuals, and publications as well as PowerPoint presentations.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with departmental and technical staff.
- Ability to think analytically and identify how similar content can be incorporated across multiple documents.
- Ability to deliver high‑quality documentation with a demonstrated attention to detail and quick turnarounds.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
- 4+ years’ experience in technical writing, proofing and editing (white paper, manuals, instructions, etc.).
- Experience working with government organizations.
- Previous experience or a strong understanding of the Department of State is a plus.
- Previous experience as SharePoint administrator is a plus.
Work will be conducted on‑site Monday‑Friday in Kingstowne, Virginia. Normal business hours run from 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM with a 1‑hour unpaid lunch break. This position is generally ineligible for telework.
