Controller – Mission‑Driven Nonprofit (Alexandria, VA)

Compensation: $150,000–$180,000+
Schedule: Monday–Friday, fully onsite
Team: Six accounting staff
Location: Alexandria, VA

A large, long-standing, mission-focused nonprofit organization in the Alexandria area is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting function. This is an excellent opportunity to join a financially stable institution with strong leadership, high employee longevity, and a deeply meaningful mission. The role is open due to an amicable relocation of the current Controller.

Role Overview

The Controller will oversee all accounting operations within a diverse and complex environment. This position is ideal for a hands-on leader who thrives in a dynamic setting and wants to influence systems, processes, and organizational infrastructure.

Key Priorities
  • Lead and mentor a six-person accounting team
  • Guide and support an upcoming ERP system transition
  • Oversee financial operations, reporting, internal controls, and process improvement efforts
  • Qualifications Required
    • 5–7+ years of progressive accounting leadership
    • Strong nonprofit accounting experience, including restricted/unrestricted funds
    • Solid understanding of GAAP
    • ERP experience; familiarity with Dynamics GP or Intacct helpful
    • Experience with accounting system implementations or major upgrades
    • Strong Excel skills
    • Public accounting experience is a plus (not seeking someone straight from public)
    • Bachelor’s degree required; CPA preferred but not required
