Full Range: $6,281 - $9,792 Monthly

Work Hours

8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Monday - Friday

Union Status

This position is a union position; therefore, provisions of the relevant collective bargaining agreement/labor contract apply to the filling of this position.

Position Overview

This position determines the structural ratings of structures on the state highway system based on calculated safe load carrying capacities. The incumbent recommends approval/disapproval of overload permits by the department for the operation of vehicles or loads that exceed the legal maximum dimensions and weights as well as for construction overloads and requests for addition of overlays.

Essential Functions (Responsibilities)
  • Determines the load ratings and load carrying capacities for structures located on the state highway system.
  • Recommends approval/disapproval of overload permits, construction overloads, and requests for additional overlay as well as related load restrictions.
  • Identifies American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Bridge Rating (BrR) system limitations and recommends necessary enhancements.
  • Utilizes additional computer programs including Structural Analysis and Design Software (STAAD), Load and Resistance Factor Rating (LARS), and Model Analyze Design (MIDAS) to modify data for desired results.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of structural engineering with special emphasis on bridge load rating, design, construction, maintenance, and inspection.
  • Current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Bridge Inspection Certification of Program Manager or Team Leader in the state of Illinois.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
Conditions of Employment
  • Occasional statewide travel with overnight stays.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
