Job Summary
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Senior Estimator is responsible for determining construction project costs, preparing, reviewing, and submitting tenders based on company and client requirements. This role is key to delivering competitive bids and innovative solutions across traditional and alternative delivery projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead detailed cost estimates for various project delivery methods
- Analyze drawings and specifications for comprehensive estimates
- Engage with subcontractors, suppliers, and clients for accurate pricing
- Collaborate with project teams to support proposals
- Participate in pre-bid activities and value engineering
- Compile quantity surveys and take-offs
- Develop comparisons of construction approaches considering cost, risk, and schedule
- Create preliminary work schedules for bidding
- Source materials, equipment, and subcontractors for quality and cost efficiency
Tender & Bids Submission
- Prepare bid packages per client instructions
- Review tender documents for discrepancies
- Attend bid openings and record results
Other
- Estimate change orders or claims for ongoing projects
Qualifications
- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technician/Technologist or Degree in Civil Engineering
- Minimum 10 years of heavy civil estimating experience
- Proven track record with DMV area infrastructure projects
- Strong local industry network
- Experience with design-build methods
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency in civil plans and specifications
- Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively
- Strong analytical and detail-oriented skills
- Knowledge of project delivery methods and civil markets
- Independence and teamwork skills
- Effective communication and initiative
Computer Skills
- Proficient in MS Office and estimating software (e.g., Heavy Bid, HCSS)
Assets
- Field experience in civil works, bridges, tunnels, roads, or railways
- Knowledge of scheduling software (MS Project or Primavera)
- Bilingual in English and French (preferred)
Work Conditions
- Based in DMV area with periodic travel
- Hybrid work after 3-month probation (2 days home/3 in office)
