Location:
Alexandria VA // Washington DC Position summary Seeking an experienced PhD Laser Physicist to conduct experimental and modeling research in laser sources, beam propagation, laser-target interactions, and laser system engineering for naval applications. The scientist will lead development of advanced laser systems, perform optical and systems-level characterization, and work closely with engineering teams to transition laboratory developments into ruggedized, fieldable systems.
Key responsibilities Design, build, and test experimental laser systems (continuous wave and pulsed; diode, fiber, solid-state, or specialized sources) and associated diagnostics. Model beam propagation through realistic maritime and atmospheric channels, including turbulence and thermal blooming effects; inform optical system design and pointing/stability requirements. Lead laboratory measurement campaigns, collect/interpret experimental data, and refine laser architectures for performance, reliability, and safety.
Collaborate with cross-discipline teams (optomechanics, controls, thermal, systems engineering) to mature designs for shipboard or platform integration. Document results in technical reports, safety documentation, and peer-reviewed publications. Required qualifications PhD in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or closely related field with emphasis on lasers/photonic systems. Hands-on experience with laser lab systems, laser safety, and optical diagnostics (spectrometers, beam profilers, interferometry, high-speed detectors).
Strong mathematical modeling skills for beam propagation, nonlinear/thermal effects, and system-level simulations. Proficient in experimental design, data acquisition, and programming (Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, C/C++).
Preferred Experience with high-energy pulsed lasers, optical frequency combs, narrow-linewidth sources, or frequency stabilization techniques. Prior DoD experience, knowledge of MIL-specs and system qualification, and experience transitioning technologies to field demonstrations.
