The Staff Accountant plays a key role in preparing and reviewing financial information essential to business decision‑making. This position supports the capture and analysis of financial data used to generate key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial reports. The Staff Accountant collaborates closely with the Assistant Controller and Lead Accountant, assuming core responsibilities that allow senior team members to focus on financial statement preparation and analysis, budgeting, variance analysis, and forecasting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:The Staff Accountant will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Prepare recurring and general month‑end journal entries
- Prepare and reconcile financial schedules on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
- Review and post weekly accounts payable batches
- Review the general ledger for accuracy and make corrections as needed
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations and deposits for multiple cash accounts
- Reconcile and analyze balance sheet and income statement accounts for accuracy and completeness
- Prepare and file state and local sales and use taxes (monthly, quarterly, and annually)
- Prepare annual personal property tax returns and other required tax filings
- Prepare schedules and reconciliations for annual audits and support external tax accountants
- Research accounting and financial inquiries and provide input into financial decision‑making
- Respond to questions from department heads regarding expenses, budgets, and financial data
- Collaborate with other accounting staff and departments to meet deadlines
- Prepare annual business license renewal forms
- Assist with budget preparation
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- CPA certification preferred
- 2+ years of accounting experience in a food service or retail environment preferred
- A recent college graduate with a strong desire to learn and a positive attitude may also be considered
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to write complex correspondence
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret:
- Business memos
- Financial reports
- General instructions and short correspondence
- Strong business math and accounting skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using:
- Whole numbers
- Common fractions
- Decimals
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail required when preparing financial data
