Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
OBJECTIVE
This position performs a wide variety of semi-skilled to skilled duties involved in the maintenance and repair of various public works facilities. This work includes the operation of hand tools, light and heavy equipment and heavy or specialized machinery/vehicles. This position may be assigned to any of the Divisions within the Public Works Department and include regularly assigned duties working alone or as a team of various sizes and may serve as a primary operator on certain types of equipment.
This position is subject to unscheduled overtime, scheduled on-call, and emergency call back duty.
- Works under the general direction of the Public Works Division Director(s) and Public Works Director
- No supervision exercised
- Performs manual to skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of municipal streets, parks, athletic fields, storm sewers, airport and other public facilities and buildings
- Skillfully operates a variety of equipment associated with public works maintenance and repair such as: snowplow equipment, road grader, excavators, single and tandem axel dump trucks, street sweeper, skid loader, mower, and other related equipment
- Performs snow and ice control operations using a variety of vehicles and equipment as directed primarily based on weather forecasts
- Performs summer maintenance on streets such as patching and crack filing, cleaning and repairing storm sewers, street sweeping and curb and gutter maintenance
- Perform electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry and other general maintenance duties on public buildings and facilities
- Fabricates and installs traffic control and informational signs
- Participates in emergency preparedness and response actions
- Performs daily maintenance, cleaning, and inspections on vehicles and equipment as required
- Safely operates a variety of hand tools and equipment
- Locates and marks underground utilities
- Performs maintenance of City parks including all tasks associated with lawn maintenance, turf management, tree trimming/removal and planting, park shelter and other facilities maintenance
- Performs setup/installation/tear down duties related to elections, special and other community related events
- Performs routine building servicing functions and assists with facilities maintenance work
- Builds, maintains, and cleans buildings and grounds; may perform some welding, plumbing and painting on City buildings, fixtures, and/or equipment as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned and assists other departments as needed
- Knowledge of streets, parks, and facilities maintenance practices
- Knowledge of building repair, plumbing, carpentry, heating and mechanical repair
- Knowledge and skill in the care and use of hand and power tools
- Knowledge and skill in basic preventative maintenance and making repairs on equipment used in this position
- Ability to understand and perform street maintenance activities, including patching, asphalt paving, storm sewer maintenance, snow plowing, sanding, street sweeping, general summer and winter maintenance and street inventory
- Ability to understand and perform parks maintenance activities, including turf renovation, irrigation, mowing, field/court maintenance, shelter building maintenance, watering, tree and shrub maintenance, play equipment area maintenance and general summer/winter park maintenance
- Ability to understand and perform stormwater management activities including storm sewers and catch basin systems
- Ability to operate in an efficient and safe manner all equipment and vehicles required for this position
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including being assigned to do a variety of jobs or help others complete tasks and being willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays on both a regularly scheduled and an “on call” basis
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with all City personnel, outside agencies and the public
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Class B CDL driver’s license (endorsement for airbrakes required within 6 months of hire)
- 2 years work experience in grounds maintenance, street facilities maintenance and/or construction as applicable to Division assignment
- 1 year experience in operation of construction equipment and vehicles
- Must pass background investigation
1 year work experience in a Public Works Department
