Overview

The purpose of this classification is to perform responsible work directing and coordinating the operations of the Motor Pool Department and contracted companies whose work includes maintenance and repair of the City's fleet of vehicles and automotive equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees the work of subordinate staff; instructs, assigns, and reviews work of subordinates; maintains standards through the appropriate coordination of activities; ensures sufficient personnel, equipment and materials are allocated to perform the work required; provides technical assistance and advice on difficult or unusual problems; assists in new employee selection; evaluates employee performance; allocates personnel; provides recommendations and approvals regarding new employee selection, transfer, promotion, discharge, and disciplinary action.
  • Processes employee concerns; addresses and resolves personnel issues and complaints within the department; ensures the safety and well being of all department employees.
  • Develops, manages and implements employee safety programs; writes, amends, and implements safety regulations for the department; oversees employee safety training; conducts employee meetings; ensures compliance with established standards.
  • Assists in the management of motor pool department operations; follows industry specific, accepted guidelines for effective management of department; organizes, schedules, plans, and inspects the operations, maintenance and repair activities of the department; assists in implementing and monitoring a preventive maintenance program to ensure that proper procedures are being followed that will maximize equipment life; assists operating departments in identifying vehicle replacement and resolving service and maintenance problems, including cost estimates;

    coordinates large projects with outside contractors; prepares work orders for various projects.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the Motor Pool Department budget; helps develop, submit and implement annual budget for department operations; prepares bid packages and evaluates bids for all equipment and materials purchased for the department; reviews vendor information; prepares bid packages and evaluates bids; receives, reviews and approves/denies purchase requisitions; monitors expenditures for compliance with approved budget.
  • Provides customer service; answers and addresses complaints which remain unresolved after subordinate supervisory action; provides support to supervisory staff as needed; keeps related records and makes required reports.
  • Prepares and processes necessary paperwork, specifications, and reports required by department policies and procedures.

Operates a personal computer, general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED, with vocational or technical training in automotive technology;
Associate’s degree is preferred; supplemented by three (3) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in automotive maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

Must possess a valid driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.
