Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in law enforcement work.
Additional Qualifications and Requirements
  • Passing score on the 2100-PSE (Protective Services Exam) is required.
  • Applicants must be P.O.S.T. certified. Please attach a copy of the completed P.O.S.T. Certificate.
  • Substitutions:
    College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
  • Necessary Special Requirement:
    Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of appointment.
  • An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
  • May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver s license at time of appointment.
  • For some positions, evidence of POST certification must be submitted at the time of the application.
  • May be required to qualify annually with a firearm.
  • For some positions, applicant must be eligible for bond.
  • Note:

    All classified jobs in State service with police officer and wildlife enforcement titles qualify as law enforcement. Jobs outside State service that will qualify as law enforcement are those performed while commissioned with the power of arrest. Military police in the armed services are law enforcement; security/guard duty is NOT qualifying.
  • Note:

    Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited school as listed by regional accrediting bodies.
Function and Level of Work
  • Function of Work:
    To provide a full range of police services with a primary emphasis on enforcement of laws, investigations of crimes and accidents, and providing emergency services and crime prevention programs; or to serve as assistant shift supervisor by overseeing the full range of police services on an assigned shift.
  • Level of Work:
    Advanced.
  • Supervision Received:
    General from a higher-level police official.
  • Supervision Exercised:
    None. May serve as a lead worker over lower-level police officers on an assigned shift.
  • Location of Work:
    Statewide.
  • Job Distinctions:
    Differs from Police Officer 2-A by routine involvement in complex investigations, intelligence gathering, and surveillance operations.
  • Differs from Police Officer 3 by the presence of certain regularly occurring duties as listed on the allocation criteria memo.
  • Differs from Police Sergeant-A by the absence of supervisory responsibility.
Duties and Responsibilities for Police Officer 3
  • 40% Protecting lives and property through active foot and mobile patrol, enforcement of laws and university regulations, investigations, and handling of records and information.
  • 40% Conducting investigations, including criminal investigations, and collecting evidence; arresting and transporting subjects; assisting other law enforcement agencies during emergencies and investigations.
  • 20% Enforcing parking and traffic regulations; issuing citations; directing traffic; assisting staff and students with vehicle issues.
  • 20% Providing first aid and emergency assistance; serving on First Aid Team and Campus Safety Committee; accompanying responders to medical emergencies; reporting hazards; providing armed escort services during peak periods; appearing in court as a witness.
  • 5% Maintaining relations with local law enforcement agencies; coordinating with 911 centers and emergency services.
  • 5% Ability to work unsupervised on routine/emergency patrols; other duties as assigned.

May be required to work a flex shift and cover various AM and PM shifts. Applicant must have P.O.S.T. Certification.
