Perform refuse transport duties and loading activities utilizing heavy equipment and eighteen wheel semi-tractor and trailer to transport refuse between City transfer station/convenience centers and the landfill; maintain assigned loading and transport equipment and perform a variety of other related duties in support of the Solid Waste Department.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Load and pack garbage and refuse into transport trailers utilizing heavy equipment.
- Haul garbage and refuse from transfer station to City landfill utilizing an eighteen wheel semi-tractor and trailer; ascend tractor cab at transfer station and set tractor/trailer in position.
- Upon arrival at landfill, back trailer to correct position for discharging refuse; operate levers to eject refuse from trailer; drive truck to free area and clean-out trailer.
- Perform daily routine maintenance and pre-trip inspection on all assigned equipment; connect hydraulic hoses, check air lines, brakes and trailer door; crank up dolly legs if necessary; assist with repairs as necessary.
- Confer with supervisor regarding basic operational decisions; make supplementary decisions as required to perform assigned duties in the field.
- Submit daily work activity and equipment status / inspection reports to higher level supervisory personnel.
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment and machinery hydraulic lift systems to include Roll-Off trucks.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- May direct and coordinate the activities of lower level staff to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
- Perform a variety of general maintenance work as needed.
High school diploma or GED; and
One (1) year of driving experience which requires the possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Course work in automotive technology, transportation technology or truck driving preferred.
Additional RequirementsPossession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Trainees must successfully complete both classroom and on the job training (OJT) instruction for transport operator service.
EnvironmentalTransfer station and landfill environment; travel from site to site; work around heavy equipment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, potentially hazardous chemicals, waste and infectious materials; inclement weather conditions.
PhysicalEssential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to heavy lifting; walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; general manual dexterity.
