Purpose

The Transportation Manager assists the Director of Operations in implementing, managing, and communicating leadership directives; enforces staff policies and procedures; maintains the security and safety of all personnel; keeps a well‑maintained and compliant fleet; and supports an efficient and effective team.

Employment Requirements
  • Serv Safe Food Safety or equivalent training from an ANSI accredited institution

Physical Environment
  • Primary work is in a warehouse environment
  • Exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures
  • Frequent lifting of up to 100 lbs
  • Required to pull in excess of 1000 lbs with a pallet jack
  • Handle individual pieces of produce and use senses to determine product quality
  • Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts
  • Noisy work environment

Job responsibilities

Key Result Area #1 – Employee Management Level II
  • Ensures schedule reliability for the transportation department and special events
  • Staffs the department to meet the food bank’s mission and adjust for workload fluctuations
  • Monitors daily employee performance using telematics, reports, and creates corrective plans for employees not meeting goals
  • Provides initial training and re‑training; uses Roadrunner Food Bank’s evaluation process to communicate goals and performance to subordinates
  • Uses driving test to determine skill level before onboarding
  • Provides leadership to facilitate the mission by ensuring support systems and practices are in place and by identifying and eliminating barriers to full potential
  • Monitors employee performance using metrics defined by the COO and reports findings to the Director of Operations and peers
  • Works to keep the driving team connected to the rest of the food bank and the mission of the organization
  • Provides support to staff through constant communication, constructive feedback, and value added decision making
Key Result Area #2 – Fleet Management Level II
  • Ensures a well‑maintained, compliant, and operational fleet
  • Develops vehicle repair and maintenance schedules and documentation
  • Recommends acquisition and retirement of vehicles or equipment to optimize efficiency and ensure safety
  • Negotiates, manages, and submits vendor contracts to senior staff pertaining to fleet
Key Result Area #3 – Compliance Level II
  • Ensures complete compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, including DOT, EPA, OSHA, etc.
  • Keeps informed about pending legislation that could affect the transportation department
  • Conducts vehicle and driver audits, reports findings, and provides action plans when necessary
  • Maintains detailed records of vehicle servicing and inspection
  • Oversees registering and licensing of all vehicles under their management
Key Result Area #4 – Safety Level I
  • Maintains effective accident prevention program and ensures all reasonable actions are taken to prevent accidents or injuries
  • Assists the management team in investigating all accidents, customer complaints, and transportation delays, and helps develop steps for prevention
  • Conducts driver meetings on a routine basis to discuss safety and potential risks
  • Provides equipment training to staff, monitors use, and ensures proper and safe operation
Key Result Area #5 – Customer Service Level I
  • Focuses on customer expectations, prevents problems while maintaining availability to staff
