To work as a UNM Lifeguard, you must maintain patron surveillance of the facility while enforcing rules and regulations effectively as directed by the University and State of New Mexico Environment Department.

Responsibilities include:

• Spotting dangers and potential hazards to prevent injuries or accidents
• Controlling and reporting unruly behavior
• Maintaining accurate documentation of headcounts, first aid practices, and other activities
• Performing cleaning duties
• Acting immediately and appropriately in emergencies to secure safety
• Providing emergency care and treatment as a team according to American Red Cross standards

Enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM, enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) during fall and spring semesters (audit hours do not count). If on Work Study, must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

• Ability to swim 500 yards continuously with rhythmic breathing
• Ability to obtain a 10-pound brick from a depth of 14 feet
• Ability to tread water with a 10-pound brick without using hands
• Ability to swim 25 yards with a 10-pound brick without using hands
• Possession or ability to obtain Lifeguarding certification for deep water through the American Red Cross
