- Limit to a maximum of three 1-hour appointments, unless approved by the overseeing pastor for additional sessions in special circumstances
- Evaluate counselees through conversations, interviews, and observations to determine the starting point, biblical strategy, and goals for discipling
- Help congregants discuss experiences, difficulties, challenges, and emotions in a healthy, biblical manner
- Encourage, support, and listen to counselees; integrate weekly sermon themes from CCNM pulpit into counseling when relevant
- Ensure all counseling is consistent with CCNM theology; deviations will be addressed
- Discipling congregants through difficult life changes and challenges; educate on biblical strategies and coping skills
- Provide biblically informed guidance on difficult decisions; address issues such as life-dominating sins, bullying, anger, depression, relationships, stress, and suicidal ideation
- Recognize when mental or emotional disorders require care outside the church and refer as needed; may recommend CCNM-approved resources (psychiatrists, therapists, treatment facilities, or community services)
- Maintain good working relationships with church leadership, ministries, and community resources as needed
- Must be a member of Calvary Church New Mexico at the time of applying and continue to consider CCNM home church while employed
- Preference for a Deacon/Deaconess or someone eligible to become one within 3 months, as determined by the CCNM pastoral team
- Willing to work 10–20 hours per week during weekday hours and/or Saturday mornings/afternoons; capable of 8–18 one-hour in-person sessions with CCNM congregants (not for members of other churches)
- Pastorally recognized written and spoken communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills with church leadership, congregants, colleagues, and community resources
- Compassionate, caring, and able to build relationships; self-directed and self-motivated
- Strong time management, organization, and ability to handle a fast-paced environment with multiple counselees
- Empathetic with leadership and discipleship/mentorship abilities
- CCNM-approved Education and Training in Biblical Counseling (completion of CCNM’s Biblical Discipleship Life Course 1 and 2, or equivalent certification, or strong working knowledge of the Bible coupled with relevant degree)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in related field (e.g., psychology, counseling, marriage and family therapy) from an accredited school
- Willingness to complete baseline International Fellowship of Chaplains (IFOC) chaplaincy training within six months of hire (CCNM pays for training; time during class is paid)
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
