Overview
Perform journey level skilled construction modification, fabrication and installation; design, lay out, repair and modify a variety of construction projects, exhibits and perform various construction activities; perform a variety of technical tasks including carpentry, painting, welding, masonry, roofing and basic non-journeyman electrical and plumbing maintenance or repair; operate and maintain equipment relative to assigned area of responsibility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSEssential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
- Lead, plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for the construction, fabrication maintenance and repair of facilities.
- Plan, direct and participate in all construction activities; oversee construction of a wide variety of facilities and structures including buildings and/or exhibits.
- Construct, repair or remodel wooden, block, concrete, brick or metal buildings and attachments.
- Perform welding work including new construction and the maintenance and repair of existing, parks, buildings and facilities.
- Perform rough and finished carpentry work from beginning to end including framing of new construction and the maintenance and repair of existing exhibits, parks, buildings and/or facilities.
- Design, lay out, build and install customized exhibits or structures; maintain and repair exhibits or structures.
- Perform the more technical and complex tasks of the work unit including identifying noncompliance of specific building and construction codes and recommend corrective actions.
- Read, interpret and follow blueprints, drawings and sketches supporting the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Construct and oversee cement-finishing tasks; forms, level and finish sidewalks, driveways, fence posts, gates gutters, spillways, headways, curbs, picnic tables, steps, walks, signs and poles.
- Operate and maintain general equipment such as tractor, forklift, dump truck and small equipment.
- Construct cement forms; pour, finish, and repair concrete pads, footings, walks, planters, fence installation, painting, plastering, welding, brick laying, basic non-journeyman plumbing and electrical.
- Read, follow and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches supporting the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Prepare and estimate time and materials list and submit to upper management for recommendation and/or approval.
- Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures; perform general job site cleanup.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
- Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in construction;
and - Three (3) years of experience in general building or facility construction.
Construction design, fabrication and welding experience preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS- Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
- Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
Field and construction site environment; travel from site to site; work around traffic and construction equipment; exposure to fumes, dust, noise and inclement weather conditions. May require work to be performed at high elevations. Bio-Park and Zoo environment may be required to work around animals.
PhysicalEssential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking, crouching, bending and climbing for prolonged periods; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
