What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a High Voltage Electrical Tradesperson. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Operate and maintain Sandia's 115 KV, 46 KV, 12.47 KV, and 5 KV distribution and transmission systems, including all associated Master Unit Substations, 5 KV & 15 KV switches, feeders (both overhead and underground).
  • Operate/utilize insulated boom trucks and Digger Derrick trucks.
  • Position may require Commercial Driver's License.
  • Obtain and analyze job information to layout, install, modify, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain facility electrical systems.
  • Work on low voltage single and multiphase distribution, lighting, control systems, associated fixtures, and components.
  • This position requires ability to work weekends and non‑standard hours as needed.

As a condition of employment, Metal Trades positions are represented by the Metal Trades Council (MTC) and represented employees must pay the monthly dues or agency fee.

Qualifications We Require
  • Perform required periodic testing of systems and utilize a computerized database to maintain required records.
  • Perform work using industry standard safety practices such as: proper use and inspection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and test equipment for confirmation of the de‑energization of electrical circuits including but not limited to insulation resistance tester, digital multi‑meter, and circuit tracers.
  • Devise tests, fabricate assemblies, or troubleshoot, as necessary.
  • Utilize a computerized database to maintain records and keep work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • May consult with other Tradespersons and provide direction to other employees as required.
  • Lay out, install, modify, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain medium and high voltage electrical systems.
  • Diagnose and correct malfunctions in complex electrical transmission and distribution systems and detect and mark all types of interior and exterior electrical utilities.
  • Work involves bucket truck and digger‑derrick pole truck operation.
  • Perform switching procedures and techniques; conduct high voltage testing procedures; and use cable splicing and HV termination techniques.
  • Perform work using industry‑standard safety practices, techniques, and sequences for determining the de‑energization of high voltage circuits; installation and removal of grounding clusters; demonstrate knowledge of test equipment to troubleshoot high voltage electrical circuits; work with facilities/construction engineers to evaluate, plan, and coordinate utility spotting activities.
  • Must have experience in the construction of HV equipment/systems and an understanding of the associated hazards involved. Must have working knowledge of SNL's high voltage electrical transmission and distribution systems and complete SNL's High Voltage Mentorship Program.
  • Obtain the mobile crane certification.
  • Lay out, install, modify, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain specialized facilities, electrical fire alarm systems, intrusion alarm systems, inverters, emergency lights, overhead doors, vehicle gates and building grounding and distribution systems including transfer switches and standby/emergency generator systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair communication systems, control and alarm systems, and associated computer equipment interfaces.
  • Responsibilities include thermographic scanning, diagnosing and correcting malfunctions in highly specialized electrical and electronic test equipment, and electromechanical circuits and devices associated with facility and process equipment and test equipment including infrared thermography, communications transmission system test equipment, and three‑point ground resistivity meters.
  • Work on complex electrical, electronic, and electromechanical systems, circuits, and devices associated with facility and process equipment.
  • Diagnose and correct malfunctions in electrical systems, circuits, and components.
  • Knowledge of SNL's Low Voltage Electrical Distribution systems.
  • Will perform appropriate, auxiliary, or related duties in the general area of work activity necessary to accomplish the above.
