Nurse Practitioner (NP) – Duties & QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
Nurse Practitioners must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a current and unrestricted license in at least one U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
- Maintain current CPR certification through an American Heart Association (AHA)–approved provider
- Maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications
- Have a minimum of one (1) year of direct patient care experience within the past three (3) years
- VA experience preferred, but not required
The Contractor shall provide qualified Nurse Practitioners who will perform comprehensive clinical duties across assigned areas within the Health Care System (HCS). NPs function in both independent and collaborative roles, as directed by the NP Professional Leader or the Chief of Patient Care Services.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesGeneral Responsibilities
- Provide diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and follow-up care for inpatient and outpatient populations
- Participate in patient care delivery in accordance with NMVAHCS policies and procedures
Clinical & Professional Responsibilities
- Perform duties independently and collaboratively in accordance with the Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice within the assigned specialty
- Work in an interdependent relationship with physicians and other members of the medical team
- Demonstrate advanced clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
- Diagnose and manage acute, chronic, and long-term health conditions
- Develop care and treatment plans consistent with clinical assessments
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests appropriately
- Prescribe or recommend pharmacologic therapies and durable medical equipment within scope of practice
- Identify and address disease prevention, health promotion, and wellness needs
- Follow NMVAHCS clinical guidelines and standards for health maintenance and illness prevention
- Maintain accurate, legible, confidential medical records
- Document all evaluations, diagnoses, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations
- Complete documentation in CPRS accurately and concisely, utilizing POE as required
- Ensure appropriate ICD and CPT coding for all patient encounters
- Maintain all mandatory credentials, competencies, and regulatory requirements
- Present clinical cases in a clear, concise, and organized manner
- Participate in ongoing professional development activities
- Evaluate personal performance against Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Scope of Practice standards and implement improvements as needed
- Treat patients, families, and staff with respect, professionalism, and dignity
- Utilize clinical research and evidence-based practices in decision-making
- Educate patients and families on preventive care, medical conditions, and prescribed treatments or medications
- Monday–Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
- Shifts may occasionally extend up to 12 hours, based on operational needs
