What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a LABORER (Vehicle Operator)
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Perform work assignments of an unskilled nature in connection with the movement of furniture, laboratory and office equipment; collection of trash, maintenance of company grounds and similar activities.
- Operate trucks and forklifts in connection with laborer crew activities.
- Exert frequent physical effort of 21 to 60 lbs., exposure to all types of weather and generally disagreeable working conditions.
- Sandia has an Agency Shop Agreement with the Metal Trades Council (MTC). The position being offered to you is a represented position. Therefore, as an employee represented by the MTC, you must either become a union member or pay a monthly agency fee equal to the union dues. You will be contacted by a union steward concerning membership during the first week of your employment.
Machine, Equipment Tools And Gauges Used
- Trucks, forklifts, farm type tractor with mower attachment, front-end loaders, skid-steer or similar type loaders, pneumatic tools, masonry saws, portable vehicle lift, steam cleaners, riding and walking tractors, powered posthole diggers, power lawn mowers, and pest and weed control spray equipment.
- Hand tools and equipment such as picks, shovels, rakes, brooms, sledges, posthole diggers, lawn mowers, wrenches, pliers, post drivers, screwdrivers, nail pullers, hammers, chisels, and hand trucks and dollies, wheelbarrows, block and tackle electric drills.
- Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.
- Perform various unskilled manual tasks requiring significant physical effort.
- Move furniture, laboratory equipment, and office items.
- Unpack and assemble prefabricated items as needed.
- Drill holes in walls (cinder block, sheetrock, masonry, sheet metal) and install fastening devices to secure shelving and cabinets.
- Dig post holes and erect, repair, or dismantle fences; install traffic signs.
- Conduct excavating, back-filling, tamping, leveling, and grading for utility lines and other purposes.
- Brace excavations to prevent cave-ins.
- Break up concrete or asphalt; patch paved areas; cut concrete slabs as instructed.
- Mix and pour concrete; remove forms once hardened.
- Collect and dispose of refuse and salvageable materials.
- Steam clean equipment and assist maintenance staff.
- Remove snow from sidewalks and driveways as needed.
- Apply exterminating products for pest control.
- Perform other similar unskilled tasks.
- Operate trucks, forklifts, and tractors as required.
- Complete simple forms and obtain signatures for delivered materials or equipment.
- Applicants will undergo multiple screening levels; all must be passed consecutively for consideration.
- Experience with grounds and landscaping work

About Our TeamGrounds and Road Services Team provides preventive and corrective maintenance to all landscape areas and roadways. This team maintains asphalt, unimproved roadways, parking lots, pedestrian travel-ways, fences and associated signs, grounds cleanup, grading activity, weed control, maintains fire breaks and water delivery to under round storage tanks.
