Full‑Time, At‑Will – Albuquerque, NM. Opening Date: 12-23-2025;

Target Pay: $56.576 per hour.
OverviewThe Second Judicial District Court is recruiting an Attorney Senior for the Civil Court Division IV. The successful candidate will provide legal advice, conduct research and analysis, and offer recommendations to the court or judicial entity. The Attorney Senior may also serve as a team leader, reviewing and coordinating the work of staff attorneys.
Responsibilities- Review cases, perform legal research, and identify, analyze, and assess the impact of applicable law.
- Train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate performance.
- Assist the Supreme Court with its constitutional rule making authority and provide staff support for its rule making committees, boards, and commissions.
- Draft recommendations and proposed dispositions for assigned cases.
- Screen pro se petitions for jurisdiction and procedural prerequisites.
- Respond on behalf of the Supreme Court to correspondence, e‑mails and telephone calls from pro se litigants, inmates, attorneys, and members of the public.
- Assist the Court in resolving pending appeals by reviewing motions, docketing statements, and briefs.
- Lead reviews and dispositions of driving‑while‑intoxicated and domestic‑violence cases on appeal from Metropolitan Court and cases on appeal from Motor Vehicle Department license revocation hearings.
- Recommend appropriate courses of action and dispositions.
- Draft memoranda of law, proposed opinions, and orders for appeals.
- Analyze briefs, records, and legal authorities cited.
- Create proposed orders addressing petitions for extraordinary writs and motions in civil and criminal matters.
- Evaluate court processes and formulate, recommend, and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with statutory and constitutional provisions, case law, and Supreme Court Rules.
- Assist management on personnel issues and ensure compliance with applicable employment laws, rules, regulations, court, and AOC policies.
- Assist with requests for proposals and invitations to bid.
- Develop judicial procedures and documentation for stream adjudication and provide legal direction to judges and courts for related cases.
- Prepare and make oral presentations, training or continuing education at national, state, and local conferences.
- Attend trials and hearings; meet with court administration staff on legal or court matters.
- Research proposed legislation, provide testimony, and participate in developing strategies for passage of legislation.
- Oversee and assess the appropriateness of mediation or dispute resolution processes and conduct them under applicable confidentiality standards.
- Lead joint discussions with all parties and conduct private discussions to identify issues, contentions, and interests and create constructive working environments that generate discussion of options for resolution.
- Oversee and encourage negotiations extending beyond initial conferences through subsequent conversations or additional conferences.
- Facilitate settlements until an agreement is reached or it does not appear possible.
- Oversee court‑mandated programs.
- Communicate, support, and develop working relationships with associated parties.
- Prepare curriculum or workshop materials for training and educational programs.
- Ensure compliance with statutory deadlines and budgetary limitations.
- May serve on statewide or local committees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Must graduate from an American Bar Association‑accredited law school and hold a license to practice in New Mexico.
- Five (5) years of experience in the practice of applicable law.
- If supervising one (1) legal staff employee, five (1) years of experience, of which one (1) year must be supervisory.
- Lead worker duties may be considered on a prorated basis for supervisory experience (one (1) year equals six (6) months).
- Strong knowledge of United States and New Mexico constitutions, federal law, New Mexico case law, statutes, rules, policies, procedures, criminal and civil procedures, appellate procedure, evidence, Code of Judicial Conduct, and rules of Professional Conduct.
