Position SummaryProvide child, adolescent, or adult patient care in a treatment or educational milieu; assist in the maintenance of a safe, secure environment that enhances treatment and/or educational effectiveness. May operate in an in‑patient/residential environment, or in outreach environments such as homes, schools, and/or community agencies. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.
DetailedResponsibilities
- Provide care to patients in a manner that promotes safety, comfort, and a therapeutic environment.
- Provide education and training specific to individual patient needs, abilities, learning preferences and readiness; coordinate with the treatment team.
- Chart observations and required documentation using the electronic medical record.
- Assist with patients’ physical needs including vital signs and specimen collection.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living and crisis intervention as needed.
- Participate in development, coordination, and implementation of patient treatment programs.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient records, adhering to HIPAA guidelines.
- Act as liaison with other departments, staff, patients, hospitals, law‑enforcement agencies, and families.
- Transport patients to/from appointments, clinics, labs, and treatments.
- Lead milieu activities and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members.
- Attend and participate in group sessions, in‑service education, and staff meetings.
- Process patient admission and registration.
- Demonstrate computer proficiency and access to information systems.
- Ensure and monitor that the Crisis Response Team is staffed per shift; respond to psychiatric crisis calls.
- Assist with transport of psychiatric patients.
- Perform phlebotomy duties as assigned.
- Coordinate and train mental health and other staff in day‑to‑day duties.
- Provide direction and coordination to staff as assigned.
- Complete order entry for lab work, x‑rays, and other procedures.
- Oversee logistics and functioning of assigned units.
- Act as preceptor for staff.
- Develop or teach staff or patient training courses.
- Monitor completion and accuracy of charting, cleaning, and unit duties.
- Assist patients in behavior control, safe‑area escort, restraint application, emergency medication administration.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
- Follow policies, procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Enhance professional growth through educational programs and workshops.
- Follow patient safety policies and report potential safety concerns.
- Encourage patients to participate in their own care.
- High School or GED Equivalent (essential).
- UNMH Mental Health Tech Training (specialization).
- 1 year directly related experience (essential).
- No preferred experience.
- CPR for Healthcare / BLS Provider or Professional Rescuer within 30 days (essential).
Heavy work:
Exerting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds frequently, 10 to 20 pounds constantly. Physical demands exceed medium work.
Working conditions include physical risk from combative patients, chemical/biohazard exposure requiring PPE, and limited access to medical room.
