Position: DISPATCHER II -

DISPATCHER II – UNM Hospital

Receive 17% weekday night, 26% weekend night, and 15% weekend day shift differentials.

Minimum offer: $20.82/hr maximum offer: $31.24/hr.

Position Summary: The position is responsible for planning, coordination, and dispatch of all emergent and non-emergent air and ground transports. Individuals must provide exceptional quality and service, quickly triage requests, and dispatch the most appropriate resource. A constant awareness of each ground and air asset is maintained to maximize safety, efficiency, and effectiveness. The dispatcher provides information and emergency notification to customers and works with advanced communications systems, practicing continuous professional development and excellent customer service.

Practices proactive operational support of the department and operates within the scope of practice as defined by the New Mexico Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and the UNMH Dispatch Medical Director. Functions as a patient advocate while ensuring adherence to hospital and departmental policies. Serves as a role model to promote a positive work environment and quality patient care, including patient care assignments across all age groups.

Detailed

Responsibilities:
  • Communicate accurate information in a timely manner to appropriate departments and personnel.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by providing high quality service that meets or exceeds departmental goals.
  • Update and maintain computer database.
  • Activate hospital disaster plan in coordination with the Emergency Department, hospital management, and the HSC.
  • Document flight-following and dispatch activities accurately.
  • Monitor and stock supply areas; maintain equipment as appropriate.
  • Attend education sessions, departmental and other meetings as appropriate.
  • Monitor Concern Network activities and provide flight follow‑up.
  • Continuously monitor radio medical channels and the dispatch request line.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring of incoming transfers and bed status.
  • Assist in orienting new employees as required.
  • Assist in patient care activities in the Emergency Department during disaster or MCI incidents.
  • Answer all incoming ambulance radio traffic; make preliminary determination of patient destination and activate specialty teams as needed.
  • Participate in educational programs, reading current literature, and attending in‑services, meetings, and workshops to enhance professional growth.
  • Follow patient safety‑related policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify and report or correct environmental conditions that may put patients at undue risk.
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and near misses in a timely manner.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting any treatment or situation that they do not understand or may not seem right.
  • Dispatch and coordinate ground and air transport requests.
  • Participate in department quality and safety programs.
  • Provide quote information for prescheduled transports in collaboration with clerical support.
  • Monitor Internet site for hospital divert status changes and update as needed; activate MCI protocols as situations arise and coordinate MCI communications.
  • Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, topical application, sublingual and intravenous medications via the seven rights; provide nebulized drug administration; document and communicate clinical findings.
Qualifications
  • Education
    :
    High School or GED Equivalent.
  • Experience
    :
    Minimum 2 years directly related experience.
  • Credentials
    :
    Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic License; CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuer within 30 days.
Physical Conditions

Sedentary work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently; may involve walking or standing for brief periods.

Working Conditions

  • Tuberculosis testing completed upon hire and as required.
