Position SummaryProvide operational support to Surgical Services, nursing units and other Hospitals departments to include processing and terminal sterilization, inventory control, and complex scope reprocessing. The technician holds a certification in surgical instrument reprocessing and demonstrates competency in performing associated core competencies. The technician may be trained in and perform other departmental technician duties and positions. Technicians work as a team to assure all instruments and supplies are ready and available for surgical and procedural patient care.
Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.
- REPROCESSING - Oversees aspects of endoscope reprocessing practices, including training, scope inventories, and scope damage and repairs. Functions as a resource and leader within the department and liaison with Endoscopy services
- COMPLEX SCOPE REPROCESSING - Performs decontamination and disinfection of complex, multi-channel scopes with elevator mechanisms. Performs testing and culturing of scopes as required. Performs high level disinfection of scopes according to standards
- SCOPE REPROCESSING - Performs decontamination and disinfection of complex, multi-channel scopes without elevator mechanisms. Performs high level disinfection of semi-critical and critical instrumentation
- DECONTAMINATION - Performs instrument and equipment decontamination procedures according to standards. Operates all decontamination equipment; performs all quality assurance integrity checks to standards
- INSTRUMENT ASSEMBLY - Inspect instruments for cleanliness; check decontaminated instruments; ensure complete assembly; reassemble instruments sets, power equipment, retractors, and other equipment; reassemble consignment instrument set and other orthopedic specialty sets; set up, prepare, wrap, and label sets and services for sterilization; prepare and control instruments for rapid turnaround for the next case prepare containers for sterilization in the required order;
educate others in the proper use of the priority board - STERILIZATION - Operate sterilizers and load sterilization carts with instrument containers, bowls and basins, etc., loads sterilizers as appropriate and initiate the appropriate sterilization cycle; maintain autoclaves by cleaning and monitoring them; educate others in the proper use and monitoring of the equipment
- ROLE MODEL - Act as a clinical resource and role model for department personnel
- RECORDS - Record required information for monitoring every load of sterilized items to ensure all parameters of the sterilization cycle were met and the items were sterilized
- STERILE PROCESSING - Clean, decontaminate, test, and distribute PCE (Patient Care Equipment) to patient care areas; record equipment information for tracking
- ENVIRONMENT - Keep all Central Supply Departments neat and clean, stocked, and in a workable order
- SURGICAL SUPPLY - Report instrument malfunction and place instruments in the appropriate location for repair
- COMMUNICATION - Keep the reporting Director advised of major problem areas as they arise
- ENVIRONMENT - Ensure all TJC and American Association for Medical Instrumentation Standards (AAMI) standards are followed
- DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops

- Sterile Processing Certification or Equivelant
- Flexible Endoscope Reprocessing Certificate
- Endoscope or GI Scope Certification w/in 15 mos of pos
- Cert from IAHCSMM or CBSPD
Heavy Work:
Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
