Position: Medical Assistant (MRI) (1313)

Position Summary

Performs a variety of functions to assist the MRI technologist in patient care and the department’s daily operations. Also provides support to patients, radiologists and other clinic staff.

This is a PRN position working variable hours.

Typical Physical Demands

Work may require stooping, bending, and stretching for files and supplies, occasionally lifting files, paper, or MRI coils weighing up to 30 pounds. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts. Work is performed in an office environment that involves frequent contact with staff and patients. At times work may require assisting to lift and transfer patients.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Adheres to MRI safety standards and requirements.
  • Escorts patients to and from the MRI suite and prepares patient for the MRI scan.
  • Assist with initial MRI safety screening of patients and visitors. Responsible for relaying patient medical history and contraindications for scan to MRI technologist before patient enters MRI suite.
  • Assist MRI Technologist to position, transfer and properly immobilize patients.
  • Assist MRI Technologist with room preparation and MRI table set-up.
  • Assist with MRI breast positioning to facilitate an accurate exam and provide chaperone services for patients as needed.
  • Assist MRI Technologist with preparation and administration of contrast.
  • Assist with cleaning and turning over the MRI room before and after use.
  • Perform venipuncture and intravenous access and assist with Piccolo testing.
  • Acts as liaison between check-in, scheduling and registration and the MRI department. Assist with MRI scheduling as requested.
  • Assist the MRI technologist and radiologist by serving as liaison for patient consultations and help facilitate future appointments as directed by the radiologist.
  • Support the radiologist and MRI technologist with invasive procedures including completion of paperwork, obtaining patient history and consent, setting up procedure trays, assist during procedure, oversee specimen processing, and post procedure follow up with patient.
  • Assist with performing Pen Rad entry.
  • Retrieves CD’s at MRI Technologist request and delivers to the patient.
  • Perform MA functions in other clinic areas as assigned.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications Performance Requirements
  • Knowledge of MRI safety standards and precautions for MRI personnel.
  • Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist with patient care.
  • Ability to acquire working knowledge of RIS system, EPIC EMR, PACS Change, Qgenda, Pen Rad and scheduling software.
  • Ability to establish working relationships with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Maintain confidentiality when interacting with patients, visitors, and staff.
Education

High school diploma or equivalent.
Graduation from an accredited medical assistant program.
Completion of MRI safety training for MRI Personnel within two weeks of hire.

Experience

Knowledge of medical terminology. One year of experience in a medical or radiology office setting preferred.

Certificate / License
  • Preferred: current certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants or registration through American Medical Technologists.
  • CPR Current CPR certification or obtained within three months of date of hire.
