Position: PARAMEDIC - RAPID RESPONSE -

PARAMEDIC – RAPID RESPONSE at UNM Hospital

Join to apply for the PARAMEDIC – RAPID RESPONSE role at UNM Hospital. This position is full time as a 0.90 FTE rotating shift.

Compensation: 17% weekday nights, 26% weekend nights, 15% weekend day shift differentials.

Minimum hourly $24.29, maximum $36.43.

Position Summary

Provide direct patient care under UNMH Rapid Response Medical Director guidelines; operate within scope of practice per New Mexico Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and UNMH special skills. Function as patient advocate, ensure adherence to hospital policies. Patient care assignments may include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

Detailed Responsibilities
  • Provide basic life support up to advanced life support, including defibrillation/ cardioversion, endotracheal intubation, medication administration, needle thoracotomy, surgical cricothyrotomy, deep suctioning, interosseous catheter insertion, perform/interpret 12‑lead EKGs and chemical blood glucose tests.
  • Perform patient care autonomously to stabilize patients and guide care until providers arrive; triage emergency care (outpatient response on hospital property to the emergency department); stabilize and/or prepare patient for transport; document all patient care activities; assess test results and laboratory values for adjusting therapy; respond to hospital non‑patient emergencies.
  • Administer medications via the seven rights, provide nebulized drug administration, document and communicate clinical findings.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, therapeutic environment for patients/families.
  • Monitor and stock supply areas; maintain equipment as appropriate.
  • Attend education sessions, departmental and other meetings as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and hospital employees.
  • Participate in department quality programs.
  • Assist in orienting new employees as required.
  • Enhance professional growth through educational programs, literature, in‑services, meetings and workshops.
  • Follow patient‑safety policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Demonstrate proactive patient‑safety approach.
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at risk.
  • Report potential or actual patient‑safety concerns, medical errors and near misses promptly.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that do not seem right.
Qualifications
  • Education – Essential: High School or GED Equivalent.
  • Education – Nonessential: Associate Degree or Bachelor's Degree.
  • Specialization – Nonessential: EMS or Bachelor's EMS;
    Related Discipline.
  • Experience – Essential: 1 year related experience.
  • Experience – Nonessential: 3 years directly related experience.
  • Credentials – Essential: CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuer certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification, Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic License, PALS, maintain unit/clinic required certifications and competencies.
  • Credentials – Nonessential: Nationally Registered Paramedic License, Valid New Mexico Driver’s License, UNM Vehicle Operator’s Permit within 60 days, Critical Care Paramedic, UNMH basic arrhythmia course within 3 months of position, Arterial Blood Gas course within 3 months of position, CEVO Course within 3 months, Ultrasound guided IV course within 3 months, DOT Medical Certification within 60 days of position.

  • Heavy Work:
    Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds frequently, 10 to 20 pounds constantly. Physical demand exceeds medium work.

    Physical risk/injuries due to combative patients, chemicals, biohazardous materials requiring PPE, possible terrain on UNMH grounds, weather exposure, random alcohol and substance testing, TB testing at hire and periodically, working proximity to incarcerated individuals, required MDC security clearance.
